Birds need caterpillars to feed their nestlings in spring. They need seeds and berries in fall to sustain them in winter, whether to migrate or to survive cold weather. That means they need native shrubs that will host butterfly and moth caterpillars and produce nutritious berries with a high fat content in fall.
